Early Foundations in Yoga

Yoga entered her life long before it became a profession or academic field. She grew up in a family where yoga was practiced naturally, and began learning at around the age of five through her uncle, Swami Vijnanananda, a disciple of Swami Sivananda Saraswati. As a child, she practiced āsanas with her family and sometimes demonstrated postures in connection with her uncle’s teaching. This early formation was not a formal certification pathway; it was an organic apprenticeship in which practice, observation, discipline, and the lived culture of yoga were woven into everyday life.

2

A Life of Spiritual Practice and Service

Her education initially followed a conventional academic path. She completed a Bachelor of Commerce and later an MBA in Business Administration, with early professional experience in management and corporate work. Yet the inner pull toward spiritual life remained strong. She met Satguru Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma) in 1996, and in 2001 dedicated her life as a Brahmacharini, a monastic spiritual aspirant committed to spiritual practice and selfless service, at Amritapuri in Kerala, India.

Life at Amritapuri deepened and transformed her understanding of yoga. Her earlier physical and family-based training expanded into a more integrated approach that included āsana, prāṇāyāma, meditation, mantra, mudrā, awareness, devotional practice, and the philosophical foundations of yoga.

Developing and Leading Amrita Yoga®

Under Amma’s guidance and inspiration, Brahmacharini Shobha became increasingly involved in developing and teaching what would become the Amrita Yoga® curriculum. From 2004 onward, she played a central role in shaping programs that could carry the depth of traditional yoga while remaining accessible to people of different ages, cultures, abilities, and levels of experience. She has served as Director of Amrita Yoga® since 2012.

Her work as Director has extended far beyond leading classes. She has developed curricula for children, preteens, teenagers, adults, seniors, and therapeutic applications; created structured teacher-training pathways; mentored hundreds of volunteer yoga teachers; and designed manuals, booklets, practice tools, and educational resources for teachers and practitioners. She developed FALCON—Fun, Adventure and Laughter with Compassionate Nurturing—for adolescents, yoga card decks and learning tools for children, and specialized programs for schools and community settings.

4

Curriculum, Teacher Training and Outreach

A distinctive feature of her work has been the adaptation of yoga for service-oriented contexts. She developed yoga programs for rural communities through Amrita SeRVe, including a curriculum used across 101 adopted villages in 22 Indian states. She also developed programs for rural women’s empowerment, children in orphanage settings, prisoners as part of rehabilitation initiatives, and police personnel working in correctional environments.

Since 2015, she has helped direct and coordinate International Day of Yoga programs for Mata Amritanandamayi Math and affiliated institutions worldwide.

Brahmacharini Shobha has taught yoga and meditation for more than three decades, beginning as a volunteer teacher in Chennai in 1996. Her teaching has reached more than 150,000 students globally and has taken her across India and internationally, including the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Her work has taken her into universities, schools, retreat centers, public institutions, community organizations, and international yoga gatherings. Selected engagements include invited talks at Dublin City University and University College Dublin, a yoga session at the New Zealand Parliament, a workshop at the University of New South Wales, teaching at the 25th Yogafest International Conference in Australia, and an invited workshop at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in New York.

Research and Academic Work

Alongside this practical and institutional work, she has built an academic research profile in yoga, meditation, and contemplative studies. She completed her PhD at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in July 2026, with research focused on yoga, meditation, and contemplative studies.

Her interdisciplinary interests include yoga therapy, meditation and Bhāvanā, mindfulness, yogic psychology, cognition, spirituality and health, psychological well-being, mind–body interventions, stress regulation, and human flourishing.

Her scholarly work includes the 2025 peer-reviewed article “Defining Bhāvanā through the PAL framework: grounded theory insights from long-term IAM®-35 practitioners,” published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, as well as earlier peer-reviewed work examining EEG dynamics associated with an integrated mind–body relaxation technique. She has also presented research on long-term IAM®-35 practice, mindfulness and perceived stress, and earlier conceptual work on Bhāvanā in relation to women, energy, and ecology.

Professional and National Service

Her academic and professional service reflects the same bridge between scholarship, public life, and yoga education. She served on the Government of India’s Expert Committee for Yoga Education in Universities under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, was an Expert Member of the Council of the Inter-University Centre for Yogic Sciences, and has served in leadership within the Indian Yoga Association.

In 2023, she served as a Sub-Working Group Coordinator for the Holistic Health stream of the Civil 20 India Integrated Holistic Health Working Group, contributing to the wider policy conversation around holistic health.

Sanskrit and Traditional Studies

Brahmacharini Shobha has also pursued sustained Sanskrit study, recognizing the importance of approaching yogic thought through its traditional language and textual culture. Her studies from 2022 to 2025 have included programs and examinations through Shri Chitrapur Math, Samskrita Bharati, Sri Surasaraswati Sabha associated with Sringeri Sharada Peetham, and the Sanskrit Club at IIT Roorkee.

Teaching Vision

Yoga is not merely something one performs with the body; it is a way of learning to bring awareness, steadiness, compassion, and depth into the whole of life.

Her teaching seeks to make traditional yogic wisdom experiential rather than abstract—helping practitioners move from simply doing a posture or technique toward sensing, understanding, and living its deeper purpose.

Through Amrita Yoga®, she continues to work at the meeting point of tradition and contemporary life—preserving the inner intent of yoga while creating practical ways for children, students, householders, spiritual seekers, older adults, people with therapeutic needs, and international practitioners to engage with it meaningfully. Her work as a teacher, researcher, curriculum developer, and monastic practitioner remains grounded in Amma’s vision of yoga as a path of awareness, love, self-discipline, compassion, and service.
